What is the difference between spur gears and helical gears?
Spur gears have teeth parallel to the axis — easy to make, no axial force. Helical gears have angled teeth — quieter and higher torque capacity, but generate axial thrust loads.
What is gear module (m)?
Module = pitch circle diameter / number of teeth. Larger module means larger, stronger teeth. Mating gears must share the same module. Example: m2, z=30 → pitch diameter 60mm.
What are the key characteristics of worm gears?
High reduction ratios (1:10–1:80) in a single stage with self-locking (back-drive prevention). However, sliding contact lowers efficiency (40–90%) and requires heat management.
