About Whole-Spec

Mechanical Specification Database for Global Engineers

Who Runs This Site

Whole-Spec is operated by a single mechanical-design engineer with field experience. Design-practice guides and editorial content are written directly by the operator; specification data is entered and verified against official KS, ISO, JIS, DIN, and ANSI/ASME source documents. This is not a content-farm aggregator — it's one engineer publishing the references they themselves search for at work. All inquiries and error reports are handled directly by the operator.

Mission and Background

In mechanical design work, engineers often spend considerable time consulting spec books or navigating multiple websites just to find the dimensions of a single bolt or bearing. Whole-Spec was built to eliminate that friction — a free mechanical specification database where you can search and compare dimensional tables for KS, ISO, JIS, DIN, and ANSI/ASME standards all in one place.

Whole-Spec is designed for engineers worldwide. While the data covers Korean (KS) and Japanese (JIS) standards comprehensively, every specification page also maps to its ISO, DIN, ANSI/ASME, and SAE equivalents — enabling US-based engineers to quickly verify cross-references, EU engineers to compare DIN/ISO options, and global procurement teams to source equivalent parts across regions. All numerical data is provided in both metric (mm) and imperial (inch) units where applicable.

Operating Principles

  • Completely Free: No registration, no subscription, no paywall. The site is supported only by display advertising; no other monetization is planned.
  • No Account Required: We collect no personal information. Language, dark mode, and unit preferences are stored only in your browser's local storage — never transmitted to our servers.
  • Multilingual: Six languages (Korean, English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Hindi). Each language version includes content tailored to that market's standards and engineering practices — not just direct translations.
  • Continuously Updated: Standards are revised periodically. We perform quarterly data verification cycles based on user reports and standards-body announcements.
  • Fast Error Response: Reported errors are reviewed within 48 business hours and corrected or acknowledged.

Data Sources and Verification

All specification data is referenced directly from official standards documents. The verification flow is: data entry → cross-validation against secondary published source → spot-check against third-party catalog (McMaster-Carr, Misumi, Bossard, etc.) → publish.

  • KS (Korean Industrial Standards): Published by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS). Source: standard.go.kr
  • ISO (International Organization for Standardization): International standards for fasteners, bearings, tolerances, and more. Source: iso.org
  • JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards): Widely used in industrial machinery across East Asia. Source: jisc.go.jp
  • DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung): European mechanical component standards. Source: din.de
  • ANSI / ASME / SAE / ASTM: US national standards for inch-series components, structural steel, fastener grades, and material specifications. Sources: ansi.org, asme.org, sae.org, astm.org

Disclaimer (Important)

All data on Whole-Spec is provided for reference purposes. Standards may be revised, and the possibility of transcription errors is not zero. For the following situations, you must consult the latest official standard document directly:

  • Safety-critical design (pressure vessels, lifting equipment, aerospace, medical devices, etc.)
  • Formal inspection, certification audits, or third-party quality assurance
  • Decisions with potential legal liability or warranty implications

Whole-Spec assumes no liability for any direct or indirect damages arising from use of this data. If you find an error, please report it to [email protected] and we will review and correct promptly.

Who This Is For

Whole-Spec is designed for the following users:

  • Mechanical Design Engineers: Quick reference for part selection, specification comparison, and drawing dimensioning
  • Manufacturing Engineers: Process planning, tool selection, and machining condition lookup
  • Procurement and Sourcing Specialists: Cross-reference verification, alternate part qualification, global supply chain comparison
  • Maintenance and Reliability Technicians: Foreign equipment parts compatibility, bearing replacement specification mapping
  • Engineering Students: Learning reference for standards, capstone and thesis projects
  • International Engineers: Cross-referencing ASME, ANSI, ISO, DIN, JIS, and KS standards across regions

What We Provide

  • Specification Database: 36 categories × 187 spec types (bolts, nuts, bearings, structural shapes, materials, tolerances, machining conditions, etc.)
  • 12 Engineering Calculators: Weight, spring, gear, cylinder, bearing life, bolt torque, fit tolerance, beam deflection, unit conversion, and more
  • Design Practice Guides: 20 topics (shaft design, keyway, fit tolerance, surface roughness, weld distortion management, etc.)
  • CAD Tips Catalog: AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, NX shortcuts and 157 curated AutoLISP routines
  • Cross-Language Comparison: View the same specification in six languages on a single page

Database Statistics

As of May 2026, Whole-Spec includes:

  • 36 categories — fasteners, power transmission, pneumatics/hydraulics, structural materials, design references, materials
  • 187 specification types — 1,646 individual size entries
  • 2,500+ pages across six languages
  • 12 calculators + 20 design guides

The database grows continuously based on user requests and identified gaps in coverage.

Contributing and Feedback

Whole-Spec grows with user feedback. You can contribute in several ways:

  • Error Reports: Data errors, broken links, incorrect unit conversions — handled promptly via email
  • Specification Requests: Missing standards or sizes — submit via feedback page or email
  • Translation Improvements: Better English/Japanese/Chinese/Hindi terminology — email contributions welcomed
