Induction hardening uses induced surface currents to heat the workpiece above Ac₃ in seconds, followed by immediate water quenching to harden only the surface. It applies to mid-carbon steels with ≥ 0.35 % C (S45C, S50C, SCM440, SUJ2), yielding a 1.5–6 mm case at HRC 55–62. The short cycle (seconds to minutes) and localized nature make it ideal for selective hardening — journal sections, splines, linear-guide rails, cams — where only specific areas need to be hard.
