Machine Structural Carbon Steel Equivalent Chart

Machine Structural Carbon Steel KS Specifications — 6 sizes
KS D 3752

S45C (KS/JIS) = Ck45 (DIN) = 1045 (ANSI): equivalent carbon machine structural steels. Most widely used for shafts, gears, and bolts.

Practical Notes

  • S45C hardness adjustable HRC 20–55 via quenching and tempering. Specify heat treatment conditions (temperature, time) on drawings.
  • S45C has poor weldability. For welding, use SM490 or SS400, or preheat before welding.

Key Features

  • S45C is shared KS/JIS designation, equivalent to DIN Ck45 and ANSI 1045; the most versatile machine structural steel
  • Classified S10C–S55C by carbon content (0.42–0.48%); higher carbon means higher strength and lower machinability
  • Quenching and tempering (QT) achieves tensile strength of 700–900 MPa

Key Applications

Shafts, gears, bolts, crankshafts, couplings, mold bases

FAQ

S45C hardness after heat treatment?

Quench (850°C oil)→HRC 50–55. Adjusted by tempering: 200°C→HRC 50, 400°C→HRC 40, 600°C→HRC 25. Set tempering temperature by required hardness.
