Austenitic Stainless Spec Table
Austenitic Stainless KS Specifications — 3 sizes
KS D 3705
Non-magnetic stainless steel represented by SUS304, widely used in food, medical, and chemical industries for its corrosion resistance and hygiene.
Practical Notes
- SUS304 suffers pitting corrosion in chloride environments (pools, coastal). Use SUS316 (Mo-added) for chloride exposure.
- Severe work hardening during cold working. Machine at low speed, high feed. Replace dull tools immediately.

Key Features
- STS304 (18Cr-8Ni) / STS316 (18Cr-12Ni-2Mo); non-magnetic with excellent corrosion resistance
- Hardens by cold working (work hardening); cannot be heat-hardened—softened by solution treatment
- Maintains toughness without brittle fracture even at cryogenic temperatures (–196 °C)
Key Applications
Food equipment, chemical tanks, architectural exterior, medical devices, semiconductor piping
FAQ
Is SUS304 magnetic?
Basically non-magnetic, but cold working (pressing, drawing) induces martensite transformation creating slight magnetism. For fully non-magnetic, use SUS316 or anneal.
