Nitriding diffuses nitrogen into the steel surface at 500–570 °C. Because no quenching is required, distortion is minimal, and the resulting case (HV 900–1200 at 0.05–0.6 mm) is extremely hard. SACM645 (Al-Cr-Mo) reaches HV 1100+, SKD61 dramatically extends die-casting mold life, and SUS420J2 suits medical and food-machine parts needing both corrosion and wear resistance. Processing takes 20–100 hours, but the parts require almost no finishing and gain fatigue strength as a bonus.
