Annealing involves heating just above Ac₁ or Ac₃ and then slow-cooling in the furnace. Its main goals are improved machinability, stress relief, microstructural homogenization, and softening. Full annealing refines the microstructure of load-bearing parts; spheroidizing annealing prepares tool steels like SKD11 for machining. Cooling rate must be orders of magnitude slower than quenching (0.5–1 °C/min). Accidental rapid cooling raises hardness and makes subsequent machining difficult.
