CATIA Interface, Shortcuts, and File Format Guide

CATIA · Shortcuts & UI

Overview

This page is a fundamentals primer for both newcomers and seasoned CATIA practitioners. It consolidates the product lineage (V4 through 3DEXPERIENCE), the on-screen anatomy (Workbench, Compass), keyboard and mouse handling, and file-format selection criteria in one place.

The goal is to lock down the interaction rules here first before they recur across the later pages (Part Design, Assembly, GSD, and so on).

1. CATIA Product Lineage at a Glance

CATIA (Computer Aided Three-Dimensional Interactive Application) originated in 1977 at Dassault Aviation in France as an in-house tool for designing the Mirage fighter. After Dassault Systèmes was spun off in 1981 and struck a distribution partnership with IBM, CATIA grew into a commercial CAD/PLM platform.

Today it is used broadly across automotive BIW and powertrain, aerospace structures and electrical, shipbuilding, heavy industry, and plant.

GenerationEraCharacteristicsCurrent Status

V51999 – presentRewritten for Windows NT onward, file-basedIndustry mainstream
V62008 – 2014ENOVIA DB-centricAbsorbed into 3DEXPERIENCE
3DEXPERIENCE2014 – presentCloud / on-premise PLM platformDefault for new customers
Tip When people in the field say "we use V6," they almost always mean early 3DEXPERIENCE. Since 2020, virtually every new customer has started directly on the 3DEXPERIENCE lineup.
Note .CATPart files can be imported or converted into 3DEXPERIENCE, but Knowledgeware rules and complex parameters are not fully preserved. For migration projects, always run a sample-part pilot up front.

Instead of "workbenches," 3DEXPERIENCE uses a Role → App hierarchy. Users first pick their Role (job function), then launch individual Apps from within it.

3. V5 Workbench Map

V5 opens a Workbench per functional group. The menu path is Start → Category → Workbench.

4. The Role Concept in 3DEXPERIENCE

In 3DEXPERIENCE you search for and launch apps from the Compass (circular icon on the left edge). Representative Roles include:

  • Mechanical & Shape Designer (MDG) — counterpart to V5 Part / Assembly
  • 3D Part Design Engineer (PDE) — extended Part Design
  • Generative Shape Designer (IGD / GSE) — counterpart to V5 GSD
  • Function-Driven Generative Designer (FGD) — topology optimization
  • Class A Designer (AS1 / AS2) — ICEM family
  • Drafter (DRA) — Drafting
  • xDesign / xShape / xGenerative Design — lightweight browser-based designers

6. Custom Shortcuts You Should Set Up Yourself

Menu path: Tools → Customize → Commands → Accelerator. The combinations below are the ones that move the productivity needle the most in real work.

  • H — toggle Hide / Show
  • Shift+Space — Swap Visible Space (visible space ↔ hidden space)
  • I — Isolate (selected items only)
  • F — Fit All In
  • N — Normal View
  • U — Manual Update
  • M — Measure Between
  • R — Reframe On
Tip At Korean manufacturers it is a common practice to bundle the Ctrl+Shift+ family into a company-wide custom-shortcut convention and roll it out across the organization. It is a reliable way to shorten onboarding time for new hires.

7. Three-Button Mouse Operation

A laptop trackpad is effectively unworkable for real tasks. A wired three-button mouse is the baseline kit.

ActionResult
Left-clickSelect
Ctrl + left-clickMulti-select
Middle-button + dragPan
Middle-button + right-click toggleZoom (drag up/down)
Middle-button + left/right simultaneouslyRotate
Scroll wheelZoom In / Out
Middle-button double-click (any point)Set that point as the rotation center
Right-clickContext menu
Double-click a tree itemEdit / Define
Double-click a SketchEnter Sketcher

Key tip: At the start of a session, double-click the middle button on a chosen point to pin the rotation center. In large assemblies, failing to pin a rotation center frequently flings the view off-screen.

8. 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse

In my experience more than half of working CATIA users pair a SpacePilot or SpaceMouse Pro / Enterprise with a regular mouse.

The left hand handles six-DOF view manipulation while the right drives selection, which measurably reduces fatigue and cycle time.

  • Learning period: one to two weeks
  • Reported productivity gain afterward: 20 – 40%
  • Configuration path: Tools → Options → General → 3Dx Devices for sensitivity and axis inversion

Because these are officially supported Dassault Systèmes devices, driver compatibility is effectively a non-issue.

9. Compass (Upper-Right Gizmo) Handling

The Compass is a three-axis gizmo that handles everything from view alignment to moving parts — all in one widget.

  • Click the X / Y / Z label — align that axis to point out of the screen (e.g., normal view to the XY plane)
  • Drag an arc — rotate about that axis
  • Drag an axis — translate along that axis
  • Drag the red square and snap to an object — freely translate / rotate the part or product
  • Right-click — Edit Position, Lock Current Orientation, etc.

Key tip: When you need to rough-position a part in an assembly before applying Constraints, drop the red square of the Compass onto the part and drag. You can align freely without any constraints, which is indispensable for preliminary placement.

Note A part moved with the Compass only moves relative to the current Product coordinate system. To move it relative to the parent assembly coordinates, activate the top-level Product first.

10. File Format Selection Criteria

10.1 V5 Native Formats

  • .CATPart — single part (Solid / Surface / Wireframe Body + Parameters + Relations)
  • .CATProduct — assembly (holds reference links only, no geometry)
  • .CATDrawing — 2D drawing (linked back to 3D references)
  • .CATAnalysis — GSA analysis
  • .CATProcess — NC manufacturing
  • .CATScript / .catvbs — macros
  • .catalog — catalog (standard parts)
  • .CATMaterial — material library
  • .CATDrwStandard — drawing standard

10.2 Neutral Format Comparison

  • STEP (AP203 / AP214 / AP242) — industry standard. AP242 carries PMI as well.
  • IGES — legacy, surface-only. Quality issues are frequent.
  • STL / 3MF — 3D printing.
  • JT — Siemens lightweight format, common in airline data exchange.
  • CGR — CATIA-proprietary tessellation. The internal representation for Visualization Mode.
  • 3DXML — Dassault's web-review format.
  • Parasolid (x_t) — for exchange with Siemens NX.
Tip For automotive OEM–supplier exchanges, STEP AP242 combined with JT is effectively the current standard. In large aerospace programs, CATIA V5 native or JT still dominate.
Note Compatibility across CATIA releases is forward-only. You can open an R21 file in R29, but you cannot open an R29 file in R21. There is no official downgrade path, so your team must standardize on a single CATIA version.

Field Checklist

  • Evaluate introducing 3Dconnexion SpaceMouse
  • Register a company-wide custom shortcut set (H, I, F, N, U, M, R, Shift+Space)
  • Build the habit of pinning the rotation center with a middle-button double-click
  • Rough-align with the Compass before applying Constraints
  • Fix the default external exchange format to STEP AP242
  • Set up a parallel JT export flow (for automotive collaboration)
  • Standardize the CATIA release across the company (knowing downgrades are impossible)
  • For 3DEXPERIENCE migrations, pre-validate conversions with a sample pilot
