DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) is an amorphous carbon film containing diamond (sp³) bonding, known for extreme hardness and low friction. Hydrogenated DLC (a-C:H, HV 2000, μ ≈ 0.1) is used in medical and optical components; hydrogen-free DLC (ta-C, HV 5000, μ ≈ 0.05) is applied to racing engine cams and valve lifters. Its excellent chemical resistance and biocompatibility also make it suitable for artificial joints and insulin pumps.
