Autodesk Inventor iLogic, Vault, Simulation, Performance, and Troubleshooting

Inventor · iLogic · Vault · Troubleshooting

Overview

The layer that elevates Inventor from "a drawing tool" to "an automated design platform" is iLogic, Vault, and Simulation. iLogic is the built-in VB.NET scripting that lets you programmatically control parameters, features, components, iProperty, and drawings. Vault is the PDM backbone, handling version, revision, lifecycle, and ECO. Stress Analysis, Dynamic Simulation, and Inventor Studio cover analysis, motion, and rendering. Layered on top are large-assembly performance strategies (Shrinkwrap, Simplify, Express Mode), troubleshooting (Recover, Missing References, Migration), Fusion 360 interoperability, new features in 2024/2025/2026, and industry-specific tips — all consolidated on this page.

1. iLogic Overview and Rule Types

iLogic runs Rules written in VB.NET syntax attached to parts, assemblies, and drawings. Menu path: Manage → iLogic → Add Rule.

  • Internal Rule: stored inside the file. Works only in that file
  • External Rule (.ilogicvb): stored outside the file. Shared among multiple files. Essential for in-house standardization
  • Event Trigger: auto-runs on events like After Open Document / Before Save / Change of Parameter / Before Vault Check-in (2025+)

Basic Syntax Examples

' Read/write parameters
Length = Parameter("L")
Parameter("Width") = Length / 2

' Conditionally suppress a feature
Feature.IsActive("Extrusion1") = (Length > 100)

' Replace a component
Component.Replace("HandleSub", "Handle_Short.ipt", True)

' Auto-set iProperty
iProperties.Value("Project", "Part Number") = "PN-" & Length & "x" & Width

2. iLogic Field Principles

Years of accumulated community wisdom. Adopting these from day one dramatically cuts maintenance cost.

  1. Use Snippets aggressively: Drag snippets from the right panel of the Rule Editor by type. Typing by hand invites typos and API mismatches
  2. Center on User Parameters: Declare user parameters like Length/Width/Config in the parameter table and let rules only read/write them. No hard-coding
  3. Try/Catch is mandatory: Stops the whole rule from aborting when a component or feature is missing
  4. Forms feature: iLogic → Forms → Add Form. The canonical way to accept user input through a UI
  5. iLogic Debugger (2025): Breakpoints, step execution, and variable watch. Mandatory for complex rules
  6. External Rules in a shared path: A network drive or Vault path. Don't copy to each user's local machine
  7. Rule invocation rules: Call indirectly with iLogicVb.RunRule("OtherRule") or iLogicVb.RunExternalRule("UpdateBOM")
Note Rules are vulnerable to recursion and infinite loops. Writing back to the same parameter inside a Change of Parameter event triggers infinite execution. Break the loop by splitting events or invoking via RunRule.

3. iPart and iAssembly

Table-driven part and assembly families. Suited for parts that vary only in size or sub-assemblies that vary only in configuration.

iPart

Menu path: Manage → Parameters → iPart Author. An Excel-style UI where each row is one member. Columns control parameters, feature suppression, iProperty, and work feature visibility. On insertion, selecting a member instantiates that configuration.

iAssembly

The assembly-level iPart. Component Replace, Suppress, Exclude, and constraint-value changes are managed as table rows.

Selection Guide

Tip iAssembly becomes a maintenance burden as complexity grows. The combination of iLogic + User Parameter + Model State is typically lighter and more extensible.

4. VBA, COM API, Add-ins, Design Automation

Step up a layer when iLogic's limits bind or when external apps need integration.

  • VBA (Alt+F11): Inventor's built-in VBA IDE. Useful for short macros and debugging, but now legacy
  • Inventor COM API: Direct access to the hierarchy — ThisApplication, ActiveDocument, ComponentOccurrences, Features. Mixed into iLogic where needed
  • Add-in (.NET): Visual Studio + Inventor Add-in template (Class Library, .NET Framework 4.7+). For complex automation, UI extensions, and licensed tool deployment
  • Design Automation (APS): Generates IPT/IAM server-side without an Inventor client. Powers web configurator backends. Requires iLogic Rules to be prepared for "no UI calls, External Rules self-contained"

5. Stress Analysis (FEA)

Inventor Professional only. Menu path: Environments → Stress Analysis.

  • Simulation Type: Single Point Load (static), Modal (natural frequency), Parametric Dimension (parametric sweep)
  • Material: must be assigned. Generic default cannot be solved
  • Constraints: Fixed, Pin, Frictionless
  • Loads: Force, Pressure, Bearing Load, Moment, Gravity, Remote Force
  • Contact: Separation, Sliding, Bonded
  • Mesh: Average/Min Element Size, Grading Factor. Smaller is more precise but slower
  • Convergence: Automatic subdivision via Adaptive h-refinement

Interpreting Results

  • von Mises Stress: Equivalent stress. The headline metric for ductile metals
  • Displacement: Displacement
  • Safety Factor: Safety factor based on material Yield Strength
  • Animate: Deformation animation
Tip The Simulation Guide button on the right of the Stress Analysis ribbon opens a step-by-step checklist. Effective for beginners to avoid omissions.
Note Inventor FEA covers linear static analysis. Hand off non-linear, large-deformation, or impact analyses to Nastran In-CAD or Ansys.

6. Dynamic Simulation and FEA Coupling

Menu path: Environments → Dynamic Simulation. Auto-converts assembly Constraints/Joints into Motion Joints to compute motion.

  • External Loads: Force, Torque, Spring/Damper
  • Environmental: Gravity, Friction
  • Graph: time vs. position, velocity, acceleration, reaction force
  • Export to FEA: sends reactions at a specific instant to Stress Analysis for coupled analysis

FEA ↔ Dynamic Simulation Coupling Procedure

  1. Identify the moment of peak reaction during operation in Dynamic Simulation
  2. Export to FEA → automatically hands that instant's load to Stress Analysis
  3. Run the static analysis in Stress Analysis

7. Inventor Studio — Rendering & Animation

Menu path: Environments → Inventor Studio. Produces high-quality visuals for product marketing.

  • Scene Styles: background, ambient light, floor reflection
  • Lighting Styles: preset lighting. Supports IBL (Image-Based Lighting)
  • Appearance: material, color, reflection, transparency
  • Camera: perspective/orthographic, Focal Length, Depth of Field

Animation

  • Animate Components: move/rotate components. Suppress obstructing constraints beforehand
  • Animate Parameter: parameter-value animations (mechanism open/close)
  • Animate Camera: camera path along a sketch curve. Walkthrough / fly-by
  • Animate Fade / Visibility: fade in/out
Tip Render time scales with resolution², quality, and frame count. Preview at low Quality first and only render the final at High. Keep lights and reflective materials minimal.

8. Vault Integration (PDM)

Inventor's file management backbone. Three editions exist.

  • Vault Basic (free bundle): file version management
  • Vault Workgroup: mid-sized scale
  • Vault Professional: history, Revision, Lifecycle, Job Processor, ECO/ECR

Get / Check-Out / Check-In

  • Get: downloads the latest version to the workspace as Read-Only
  • Check-Out: claims edit rights. Others become Read-Only
  • Check-In: uploads a new version. Habit of adding Comments is required
  • Undo Check-Out: discards changes and restores the original
Tip Don't Check-Out the entire large assembly. Check-Out only the IPT/IAM you actually edit and refresh the rest with Get. Minimizes blocking.

Revision & Lifecycle

  • Revision Scheme: A, B, C… or 1, 2, 3…
  • Revision Bump: auto-increments with Lifecycle state changes
  • Revision Table on Drawing: the IDW/DWG Revision Table syncs with Vault Revision
  • Default Lifecycle flow: Work in Progress → For Review → Released → Obsolete
  • Files in the Released state are non-editable (Check-Out blocked)

ECO / Change Order (Vault Pro)

Manages engineering change requests inside Vault. Tracks the affected file bundle, reviewers, approvers, and impact scope.

Field Recommendations

  • Single Project File: All designers share a single .ipj (Vault root)
  • Content Center in Vault: Upload CC libraries to Vault so everyone uses the same standard
  • Duplicate File Check: Vault forbids duplicate filenames. Enforce naming rules (prefix, auto-numbering)
  • Copy Design: Copy an existing assembly while preserving references (derivative design). Renaming alone doesn't break references

9. Large Assembly Performance Strategies

Means that swing perceived speed when handling thousands of parts.

Express Mode

Opens a large assembly as read-only fast. Open dialog → Options → "Express Mode". Loads only graphics and metadata; parameter editing is disabled.

Level of Detail (LOD)

Assembly Representations. Master / All Components Suppressed / Custom LOD. Selecting an LOD at open time saves memory and time dramatically. The concept itself is in 03; here the focus is performance usage.

Shrinkwrap

Simplifies a complex assembly into a single Surface Composite or a Single Body Solid. Menu path: Assemble → Simplify → Shrinkwrap (or Shrinkwrap Substitute in the Part environment).

TypeUse
Surface Composite (default)Smallest file, fastest to compute
Single Solid Body (Derived)Solid conversion. Accurate mass properties
Multi-BodyMultiple solids. Each body selectable

Insert the result part upstream in place of the original assembly → dramatic gains in file size and performance.

Tip Turning on a Custom LOD that "removes internal parts" before running Shrinkwrap produces a small, fast, skin-only file.

Simplify Tool (2020+)

Menu path: Assemble → Simplify. Remove Internal Parts, Remove Holes, Remove Fillets, and Envelope creation. Effective for creating lightweight models for delivery or partner sharing.

Graphics and System Tuning

  • Hardware Acceleration: Enable at Inventor Options → Hardware
  • Certified graphics drivers: Nvidia Quadro / RTX A series, AMD Radeon Pro
  • Turn off Shadow / Reflection / Ambient Occlusion: View tab
  • Textures Off: High-res textures lag large assemblies
  • Temp Folder: Point Temp to an SSD via Inventor Options → Files
  • Save As New: Periodically save long-lived files as a fresh copy to clean internal history
  • Purge All: Remove unused references and styles via Manage → Styles Editor → Purge

10. Troubleshooting

Missing References

  • Symptom: "Resolve Files" dialog when opening an assembly
  • Cause: referenced files moved / deleted / renamed
  • Resolution:
  1. "Skip All" and check which parts are missing
  2. Fix reference paths with Tools → Design Assistant
  3. Re-check Workspace/Workgroup/Libraries paths in the Project File (.ipj)
  4. With Vault, use "Get Latest" for automatic recovery

Recover

When a file is corrupted or after a crash, use File → Open → right-click file → Recover. It regenerates the feature tree, and failed features are marked Sick/Error. Autosave: Inventor Options → Save → Reminder Timer. The 30-minute default is too long; drop it to 10 minutes.

Frame Generator Skeleton Loss

Frame Generator files must not be renamed or moved. If the Skeleton is lost, recreation is nearly from scratch. Move or rename only through Vault or Design Assistant.

Migration (Version Upgrade)

  • Order: .ipt → .iam → .idw. Part → Assembly → Drawing
  • Task Scheduler: Run Inventor Task Scheduler → "Migrate Files" to upgrade folders in bulk
  • Files saved in a newer version cannot be opened in older versions. The whole company upgrades together is the default

Sketch / Assembly Errors

  • Sick Feature (red X): Missing reference. Redefine missing constraints or projections in Edit Sketch
  • Over-Constrained: Duplicate dimensions. Delete the extras or convert to Driven
  • Unsolved Constraint: Constraint conflict. Right-click the entry in the Model Browser → Other Solution / Suppress

Drawing View Conversion Failures

Section View generation frequently fails on large assemblies. Create as Raster View first → switch the final view to Precise. Also check View → Model State / LOD.

Crash Response

  • Clean out %TEMP%\Autodesk\Inventor
  • Reset initialization with Reset Inventor Settings
  • Run "Repair" from Autodesk Access to restore installation integrity
  • Logs generated during crashes should be submitted to Autodesk Support

Plant Piping

  • Tube & Pipe module is mandatory
  • Spool drawings split IPN Scenes into IDW sheets
  • Author P&ID separately in AutoCAD P&ID, then materialize 3D in Inventor

Field Checklist

  • iLogic External Rules live in a shared path (network / Vault) under version control
  • Change of Parameter event rules have been checked for infinite loops
  • User Parameters are the single entry point for all logic
  • When iPart/iAssembly grows too complex, migration to iLogic + Model State is considered
  • Before Stress Analysis, material is assigned and mesh convergence is verified
  • The peak-reaction instant from Dynamic Simulation is exported to Stress Analysis for coupled static analysis
  • In Vault, only the edited files are checked out instead of the whole assembly
  • Released files are derived via Copy Design, leaving the originals protected
  • Large assemblies are opened in Express Mode / LOD; deliverables are simplified with Shrinkwrap / Simplify
  • Autosave Reminder is set to 10 minutes
  • Frame Generator files have never been renamed or moved
  • Migration is batch-processed via Task Scheduler in the order ipt → iam → idw
  • The 2025 iLogic Debugger and Vault Check-In Trigger are part of the in-house standards validation pipeline
