1. DWG Version Compatibility

1.1 DWG Format Map

AutoCAD VersionDWG Format
2018 – 2026DWG 2018
2013 – 2017DWG 2013
2010 – 2012DWG 2010
2007 – 2009DWG 2007
2004 – 2006DWG 2004

A higher format won't open in a lower version of AutoCAD. If your subcontractor runs an older version, use SAVEAS and pick a lower format.

Tip To change the default save format, go to OPTIONS → Open and Save → Default File Format. If the whole team sets it to the lowest version in use, round-trip conversion incidents drop sharply.

1.2 DWG Compatibility Tools

  • DWG TrueView (free Autodesk viewer): down-version conversion and simple viewing.
  • DWGCONVERT: batch convert the format of multiple DWGs.
  • Teigha / ODA File Converter: free converters for third-party CAD.

1.3 Proxy Objects

Objects that belong to a specific toolset — Civil 3D, Plant 3D, Architecture — appear as "Proxy" objects when opened in plain AutoCAD. You can view them but cannot edit the originals.

  • PROXYSHOW=1: Show proxy objects.
  • EXPORTTOAUTOCAD: Convert toolset objects to plain AutoCAD objects. They become editable, but lose their intelligent properties.

2. File Corruption Recovery

2.1 Step-by-Step Recovery Flow

  1. Plain OPEN: Try the standard way first.
  2. RECOVER: If that fails, use RECOVER and pick the damaged file. AUDIT is run automatically.
  3. RECOVERALL: Use this when Xrefs also need to be recovered.
  4. AUDIT Y: Once open, run AUDIT to fix any remaining errors.
  5. DWG TrueView: A newer-version viewer sometimes succeeds where AutoCAD fails.
  6. .bak file: Rename the .bak at SAVEFILEPATH to .dwg.
  7. Autosave .sv$: Also at SAVEFILEPATH. Rename to .dwg and open.
  8. Last resort: Autodesk Recovery Service, ODA File Repair, or commercial recovery tools.
Tip After a successful recovery, immediately SAVEAS under a new name. Don't overwrite the corrupted original.

2.2 Lock Files (.dwl, .dwl2)

When the same DWG is opened by two sessions, a lock file is created. If a session terminates abnormally the lock remains, causing the "Drawing is locked by another session" error. If no such session actually exists, delete the .dwl and .dwl2 files manually from Explorer.

3. Missing Fonts — SHX / TTF

3.1 SHX Missing

When you see "One or more SHX files are missing":

  1. Add the SHX folder to OPTIONS → Files → Support File Search Path.
  2. Copy the missing fonts into %APPDATA%\Autodesk\AutoCAD 202x\R2x.x\enu\Fonts.
  3. Set a substitute via the FONTALT system variable (e.g., simplex).
  4. Change the text objects' TextStyle to an in-house standard font, then remove the missing definition with PURGE.
Note Setting SHXMISSINGWARNING=0 to suppress the warning is not a real fix. The moment the drawing goes to a partner or client, the issue pops up again on their end.

3.2 TTF Issues

  • Unlicensed custom TTFs fall back to substitute rendering on other PCs, changing the look of text.
  • Limit yourself to standard TTFs (Arial, Times New Roman, Malgun Gothic, etc.) plus a small set of in-house TTFs, and either bundle the in-house TTFs in eTransmit or install them on a shared network location.

4. Common Error Responses

ErrorAction
Fatal Error / Unhandled ExceptionDisable Hardware Acceleration in 3DCONFIG; update graphics drivers
License ErrorRestart Autodesk License Manager; sign out and back in
Drawing is lockedManually delete .dwl/.dwl2 lock files
Proxy objectsConvert with EXPORTTOAUTOCAD
Slow open/saveINDEXCTL=3, -PURGE, turn off Drawing History
Stuttering zoom/panVTENABLE=0; turn off "Smooth line display" in GRAPHICSCONFIG
Plot stallsBACKGROUNDPLOT=0; lower PC3 quality

4.1 Resetting Profile and User Settings

  • OPTIONS → Profile tab → Reset.
  • Full reset: rename the %APPDATA%\Autodesk\AutoCAD 202x\R2x.x\enu folder and relaunch AutoCAD — a fresh profile will be created.
  • Always back up important .arg files, custom LSPs, and CUIx first.

5. Industry-Specific Tips

5.1 Mechanical

  • Units: mm, precision 0.01 or 0.001.
  • Font: romans.shx (international convention).
  • Line weights (ISO 128): outlines 0.5 mm, hidden lines 0.25 mm, centerlines / dimensions 0.13 mm.
  • Dimensions: ISO 129. Baseline dimensions + GD&T.
  • GD&T: TOLERANCE command + Feature Control Frame. Datum symbols as separate blocks.
  • Part numbers: attribute blocks + Count (2022+) + Multileader Collect.
  • BOM: auto-generate tables with DATAEXTRACTION. External BOM management is also possible via an Excel Data Link.
  • Detail views: 2:1, 5:1 enlargement via paper space viewports.
Tip The AutoCAD Mechanical toolset has parts libraries, BOM, and tolerance stacks automated — it's dramatically faster than plain AutoCAD. If your license includes it, make sure you use it.

5.2 Architectural

  • Units: mm (Korea/Europe) or inch (US).
  • Layers: AIA/NCS standards like A-WALL-FULL, A-DOOR-IDEN.
  • Doors and windows: Dynamic Blocks (variable width + Flip for swing direction).
  • Hatches: ANSI31 (wall sections), AR-CONC, AR-BRSTD, AR-RSHKE, etc., by purpose.
  • Room tags: attribute blocks.
  • Level markers: Dynamic Blocks with Lookup parameters.
  • North arrow / scale bar: Annotative blocks.
  • Xref structure: keep Arch/Struct/MEP in separate files and composite them on sheets.
Tip Deriving plans, elevations, and sections from a single model file keeps them consistent. For sections, use SECTIONPLANE or dedicated Section models.

5.3 Electrical

  • Symbols: standard blocks for outlets, switches, and fixtures.
  • Wiring: separate linetypes by voltage and purpose (220V, 380V, communications, control).
  • Circuit numbers: attribute blocks + Multileader.
  • Panel schedules: TABLE + Excel Data Link.
  • AutoCAD Electrical toolset: automates wiring, circuit tracing, and parts lists.

5.4 Civil

  • Units: m or mm. Unify with the project unit.
  • Coordinate system: actual survey coordinates (TM/UTM). Do not shift the origin — doing so breaks DXF exchange and interoperability with other software.
  • Linetypes: defined per road centerline, boundary, and contour.
  • Contours: 3D polylines projected onto plan.
  • Stationing: automated in Civil 3D.
  • Profiles/sections: Civil 3D specific.
Tip Civil DWGs can have coordinate values in the millions, so you must strictly observe object snap, Ortho, and Polar basics. Small mistakes blow up into tens of meters of error.

5.5 Plant / Piping (P&ID)

  • Symbols: ISA / ISO 5.1 instrument and valve symbols.
  • Line numbers: project-standard patterns (e.g., 10"-CS-1001-A) as attribute blocks.
  • AutoCAD Plant 3D / P&ID toolsets: dedicated symbol libraries, line-number management, and isometric generation.

6. Best Practices Summary

6.1 Layers & Blocks

  • Draw on appropriate layers, not on Layer 0.
  • Color, linetype, and lineweight should be ByLayer.
  • Inside a block, use Layer 0 + ByBlock.
  • No exceptions — turn repeated objects into blocks.

6.2 Dimensions & Annotation

  • One base style + child styles.
  • Use Annotative only when multiple scales are actually needed.
  • No duplicate dimensions. Define general tolerances in the title block.
  • Split fonts: SHX (mechanical) vs. standard TTF (presentation).

6.3 File Structure

  • Standardize project folders (00-Standards, 01-Xrefs, 02-Sheets, 03-Output).
  • 1 sheet DWG = 1 layout.
  • In sheet DWGs, place only Xrefs in model space; keep actual geometry in model files.

6.4 Naming Conventions

  • Dates in ISO 8601: 2026-04-17_PROJ-A1-101.dwg.
  • Use - or _ instead of spaces.
  • Versions: _v01, _v02. Revisions: _REV-A, _REV-B.

6.5 Routine Maintenance

FrequencyTask
DailyCheck autosave; handle crash reports
WeeklyAUDIT + -PURGE A * N on primary DWGs
MonthlyOVERKILL, template review, backup-restore test
Project close-outETRANSMIT archive, Sheet Set Archive

7. Drawing Quality Checklist (Right Before Plotting)

  • Layer standards (NCS / in-house) are followed
  • All Xrefs load cleanly; paths are Relative
  • Dimension styles and text styles are consistent
  • Annotation Scale matches viewport scale
  • Hatch scale is consistent; no excessively dense hatches
  • Viewport Display Lock is set
  • Title block Sheet Set Fields are filled in correctly
  • Plot Style Table (CTB/STB) is assigned
  • No SHX/TTF missing-font warnings
  • AUDIT passes; file size is reasonable
  • Draft PDF has been cross-reviewed
  • PLOTSTAMP records release information

8. Latest Version Features — 2024 · 2025 · 2026

8.1 AutoCAD 2024

  • Markup Assist web integration.
  • My Insights dashboard: tips and automation recommendations based on personal usage stats.
  • Performance: further improvements to startup and file-open speeds over 2024.

8.3 AutoCAD 2026

Performance

  • File open up to 11x faster (per Autodesk's official figures for large DWGs).
  • Startup speed up to 4x faster.
  • Broad improvements for complex Xrefs and 3D navigation.

Smart Blocks: Detect and Convert (GA)

  • Scans the drawing and detects repeated text and geometry patterns.
  • Pick a target — new definition, existing block, or library — and convert in bulk.
  • A huge productivity win for standardizing legacy drawings.

Activity Insights: What's Changed

  • Summary of changes between saves. Visualizes which objects were modified.
  • Especially useful for team review and QA workflows.

Markup Import + Autodesk Docs bidirectional sync

  • PDF/image markups made in Docs sync automatically to AutoCAD's Trace layer.
  • Edits made on either side are reflected on the other.

Autodesk AI Assistant

  • Chat UI for command suggestions, document search, and workflow guidance.

Mac-specific

  • Mature Apple Silicon native optimization. Expanded ribbon UI.

LT

  • 2026 LT also includes Activity Insights and Markup Import.
Tip The practical impact of 2026 is biggest in file-open and startup speed — especially on large projects with many Xrefs. If you plan to standardize a legacy drawing set into a block-based library, Smart Blocks: Detect and Convert is by itself a solid justification for upgrading to 2026.
Note The AI features in the latest versions send requests to Autodesk's cloud, not to your local machine. For projects under strict security constraints (defense, nuclear, financial infrastructure, etc.), a policy review is mandatory beforehand.
