Normalizing heats the part 30–50 °C above Ac₃ (typically 850–880 °C) and cools it in still air. The slightly faster cooling (vs. annealing) produces fine pearlite, leaving the material slightly harder yet tougher than annealed. Used for microstructural improvement and grain refinement after forging, casting, or welding, often as a preparatory step before further heat treatment. For S45C, post-normalizing hardness is about HB 170–210.
