Groove Weld Spec Table

Groove Weld KS Specifications — 4 sizes
KS B ISO 2553

Groove weld symbols for butt joints with beveled edges (V, U, J, etc.).

Practical Notes

  • For full-penetration strength members. Requires groove preparation (V, U, J, etc.) — costlier than fillet welds.

Key Features

  • I, V, U, J, and X groove joint types distinguished by weld cross-section symbols
  • AWS A2.4 / ISO 2553 symbol system; groove angle, root gap, and root face specified
  • Complete Joint Penetration (CJP) or Partial (PJP) designated; directly linked to structural strength calculation

Key Applications

Pressure vessel longitudinal/circumferential seams, bridge girder butt joints, building column-beam connections, ship hull plates, pipe circumferential welds

FAQ

Difference between V-groove and U-groove?

V-groove is simpler but requires more weld metal. U-groove costs more to prepare but uses less weld metal with less distortion. U-groove is advantageous for thick plates (25mm+).
