Carburizing diffuses carbon into the surface of low-carbon steels (SCM415/SCM420/SNCM420) to create a high-carbon (0.8–1.0 % C) layer, then quenches only the case. The tough low-carbon core is retained while the case reaches HRC 58–62 at 0.5–1.5 mm depth — ideal for gear teeth, splines, and cams that need both wear and impact resistance. Gas carburizing at 930 °C for several to tens of hours is mainstream; vacuum carburizing offers reduced distortion and more consistent quality.
